Ames City Manager Steve Schainker will be giving a report on local policing to the Ames City Council with recommendations to help improve policing in the city.

The report will be given on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. during a special city council meeting, according to a press release from the City of Ames. It will be a virtual meeting on Zoom and is open to the public.

Residents can access the meeting on the city's website. Schainker's report will also be available on the website by Friday, Sept. 25 at 5 p.m.

“Shortly after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, the Ames City Council began receiving an extraordinary amount of comments and questions about how our local law enforcement system operates,” Ames Mayor John Haila said in the city press release. “This report represents a thoughtful analysis of the concerns we heard, and the report recommends modifications to policies and practices as we move forward.”

During the meeting, the public will be allowed to give input, but each person will be limited to three minutes. Only topics regarding the report will be accepted at the special city council meeting.
