Due to low water pressure caused by a fire line break today at the Barilla facility, three east Ames businesses are under a “Boil Water Alert.” This order impacts only these three businesses: Barilla (3311 E Lincoln Way), Eagle’s Loft Early Learning Center (2715 Dayton Ave.), and ColorBiotics (1725 Dayton Ave.).
The “Boil Water Alert” advisory will remain in effect for these facilities until officials from the Ames Water Utility have issued a “safe to drink” notice.
“Providing safe drinking water to our customers is our No. 1 priority,” said Lyle Hammes, Ames Water Treatment Plant Superintendent. “Water pressure plays a role in keeping our water safe. When water pressure drops significantly, we engage in testing to ensure the safety of water distribution system.”
As a precaution, customers at these locations should use bottled water or boil tap water for uses such as drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, preparing food, and making ice. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for three to five minutes, and then allowed to cool. Boiled water may have a ‘flat’ taste due to a decrease in oxygen content. Pouring the cooled water back and forth between two containers will help restore a more normal taste.
This alert will remain in effect until the City of Ames is satisfied that there is no longer a threat and will issue notification.
