Boone County seeks equipment operator for secondary roads department

Boone County has announced a job opening for the position of Equipment Operator in its Secondary Roads Department. The position was prepared by the County Engineer’s Office and received approval from the Board of Supervisors on March 6, 2024.

The Equipment Operator will be a regular county employee, hired by the Board of Supervisors and supervised by the Secondary Road Foreman. According to the official description, responsibilities include operating various types of light to heavy equipment for maintaining, repairing, and constructing county roads, rights-of-way, and drainage district facilities. The role also involves snow removal, sanding, salting, plowing, patching work with asphalt mix, clearing brush and debris from road ditches, repairing tile intakes, and installing or replacing road signs and barricades.

Additional duties may include routine maintenance on assigned equipment such as oil changes and lubrication, assisting mechanics with repairs when necessary, checking loads of materials like rock or asphalt mix, applying pesticides to brush and weeds in right-of-ways, and performing other tasks as directed by supervisors.

Applicants must have at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent and one year of experience operating light or medium equipment such as a single axle dump truck. A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes is required. Within six months of employment start date, candidates must obtain a Type-6 Pesticide Applicator’s License.

Other preferred qualifications include knowledge related to automotive and construction equipment use and repair; understanding principles used in maintenance and construction of county roads; familiarity with materials and methods common to these activities; and ability to safely perform physical tasks under varying weather conditions.

The position is full-time. Employees may be assigned to any of Boone County’s three secondary road maintenance facilities but typically report daily to the same location unless otherwise directed by supervisors.
