Findings from a grant-funded Historic Resource Survey of the Chautauqua Park and Ridgewood Subdivisions will be presented at a Neighborhood Information Meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 6, at the Ames Public Library, Danfoss Room, 515 Douglas Ave. The public is encouraged to attend.
In February, the City of Ames was awarded a $14,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs (IDCA) to complete an Intensive Level Survey of properties in the City’s Chautauqua Park and Ridgewood Subdivisions. The IDCA awarded the grants as part of its commitment to investing in projects to preserve the state’s historical assets.
The funds are being used to complete an intensive level survey of properties in the city’s Chautauqua Park and Ridgewood subdivisions. This includes neighborhoods near Brookside Park, north of Sixth Street, and west of the railroad tracks including parts of Ridgewood and Brookridge avenues between Sixth and 13th streets. The work includes completion of a historic context, research of primary source documents, photography of all resources, and completion of State of Iowa Inventory Forms for all properties in the project area.
“Capturing the data now helps us accurately preserve the history of these historic Ames neighborhoods,” said Eloise Sahlstrom, planner with the Ames Planning and Housing Department.
The results of the project will determine the historic significance of these two Ames neighborhoods and their eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Listing in the National Register allows property owners to access Iowa State Tax Credits that support the rehabilitation of historic buildings.
