Tuition rates for in-state students attending Iowa State University rose by 5.2% during the 2022-23 school year, as reported in the latest disclosure, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Iowa residents paid $10,133 to attend the public university this year, which is $499 more than the $9,634 charged for the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students were charged $26,617 for the 2022-23 school year, an increase of 4.6% from $25,446 the previous year. This amount is 162.7% higher than the in-state tuition rate.

Approximately 52% of the undergraduate student body at Iowa State University are Iowa residents, while about 45% come from other U.S. states and 3% are international students.

Data indicates that 89% of full-time undergraduates who enrolled in the 2022-23 academic year received some form of financial aid. A total of 4,366 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $46.8 million, and 2,678 students borrowed more than $22.3 million in student loans.

Across all undergraduates, 18,494 students received grants or scholarships totaling $179.1 million. Additionally, 11,588 students took out federal student loans amounting to $70.6 million.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
