Ames Electric Services has completed installation of an additional public electric vehicle charger, located at the southwest corner of Hy-Vee at 3800 Lincoln Way. The new Level-2 charger can serve two vehicles at a time and can provide 25 to 35 miles added range per hour of charge, depending on the model of the vehicle charging.
“Ames Electric Services continues to invest in more charging stations to make EV charging easy and accessible to all EV drivers,” said Ames Electric Services Director Donald Kom. “Building this infrastructure in Ames helps support EV growth both in our city and throughout the state. Our programs and rebates encourage customers to consider EVs for transportation needs.”
This station is the fifth location operated by Ames Electric Services. Other Level-2 charging locations include the west parking lot of City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.; west of Ames Electric Power Plant, 200 E. Fifth St.; and the Ames Intermodal Facility parking ramp, 129 Hayward Ave. Two Level-3 Fast Chargers are located near U.S. 30 at Kum and Go, 2108 Isaac Newton Drive.
Ames Electric Services provides public charging at a cost of 10 cents per kWh at the Level-2 charging locations and 15 cents per kWh at the Level-3 fast-charging station. According to U.S. Department of Energy, fueling electric vehicles with electricity at Iowa’s average electric rate is comparable to paying $1.03 per gallon of gas, in terms of the cost of fuel per mile.
Additional public charging is offered throughout Ames by private businesses. There are 14 locations in total (including the new Hy-Vee location). Five chargers are public, and nine are privately owned. The City of Ames is committed to providing additional EV charging locations to ensure EV charging is easy and accessible to all. Funding was allocated in the 2022 Capital Improvements Plan to fund additional charging locations throughout the community.
