Iowa DOT proposes widening project impacting U.S. 6 in Johnson County

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced a proposal to replace the pavement on U.S. 6, also known as W. Marengo Road, in Tiffin. The project includes adding an additional lane to provide a center left turn lane and incorporating right turn lanes at Kimberlite Drive and Croell Avenue. Sidewalks are also proposed throughout the project’s limits.

The initiative will require acquiring land from two local parks: approximately 0.13 acres from Jim Bartels Tiffin City Park and about 0.03 acres from Mayor Glenn Potter Park. This land will be used for revetment at culvert extensions to prevent erosion, with these areas becoming part of the transportation system.

Both parks are publicly owned by the City of Tiffin and have been identified as Section 4(f) resources, which means they are protected under the U.S. Department of Transportation Act of 1966. The project is expected to have a de minimis impact on these areas, meaning it should not adversely affect their activities or features after measures to minimize harm are considered.

Residents are encouraged to share their input on the project by June 26. Comments require providing a name and zip code. For further inquiries or assistance regarding language translation or special needs, residents can contact Christine Schwake at the Iowa DOT.

“Iowa DOT ensures nondiscrimination and equal employment in all programs and activities in accordance with Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” states the department’s announcement.
