Iowa State University’s women’s swimming and diving team continued its performance at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, advancing several athletes to finals on the second day of competition. The Cyclones had strong results in both swimming and diving events.
Freshman Carlotta Gazzola led the team in the 500 freestyle, qualifying for finals with a preliminary time of 4:58.79. She improved her time slightly in the evening session, finishing 22nd overall with a 4:58.42 and contributing three points to Iowa State’s team total.
In the 200 individual medley (IM), two Cyclone swimmers advanced to finals. Anja Peck earned her spot with a preliminary swim of 2:04.49, while Piper Hagen secured hers by winning a swim-off in 2:03.12—the team’s best IM time of the day. In finals, Peck finished 14th with a time of 2:04.38 and Hagen placed 16th at 2:06.33.
The diving squad also contributed points in the one-meter event, where senior Kate Mitchell led Iowa State divers by scoring 279.10 points to finish ninth overall and win the B-final. Freshman Jade Hazes scored 254.20 for twelfth place, while Abby Tollefson added a fourteenth-place finish with a score of 251.30.
Head Coach Matt Leach commented on his team’s efforts, stating, “Everyone showed up and produced today in all categories,” said Head Coach Matt Leach. “It wasn’t just our upperclassmen or our seniors, it was a mix of everyone. So when you look at how we’re developing, we’re moving in the right direction and we’re going to keep pushing the pedal to the metal, go Cyclones!”
The Hawkeye Invitational continues tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 5 p.m.
