Stanislava Shulzhenko and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar from Iowa State made history on Wednesday by becoming the first doubles team from the school to compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships. The match took place in Orlando, where they faced Notre Dame’s Bojana Pozder and Bianca Molnar, ranked No. 84 nationally.
The Cyclones’ pair overcame an early setback, losing the first two games of the opening set before recovering to win it 7-5. In the second set, Shulzhenko and Alberto Vilar built a 3-0 lead but saw Notre Dame rally to take six of the next seven games, winning the set 6-4. The match was decided by a 10-point tiebreaker, with Shulzhenko and Alberto Vilar securing victory at 10-6.
Shulzhenko and Alberto Vilar will advance to play USC’s Lily Fairclough and Daniela Borruel in the Round of 16 on Thursday. The time for that match has not yet been announced.
