Schools might be closed in Iowa, but the shortage of personal protective equipment has seen a number of students from the Iowa State University making new PPE to be used by health care workers.
Previously filled with students undertaking different projects, the labs are deserted and are only occupied by the students manufacturing new PPE’s, according to WHO-TV.
Anna Lukens, an undergraduate research assistant, is among the students taking part in this exercise. According to her, a maximum of eight students are allowed to work in a lab at one time and use around 30 3D printers to create face masks.
Shelby Doyle, assistant professor of architecture, said that the goal is to make 2,000 masks with 300 already sent out to health care workers. However, according to Doyle, it takes three hours to make a single mask, and they are forced to rotate the students around to keep the printers going 24 hours a day.
The students are not planning to stop any time soon unless their safety is compromised or they run out of materials.
