The Ames Power Plant remains closed for planned maintenance through July 17, according to the city's website.
The facility’s closure renders the Ames Resource Recovery Plant temporarily incapable of processing garbage into fuel. All the garbage produced in Story County will go directly to the landfill for the meantime.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of several free recycling programs while the Food Waste Diversion continues to offer free food waste disposal. Bins can be found at any area grocery store or Hy-Vee gas station in Ames. There is also a bin on the north side of the Resource Recovery Plant.
The Resource Recovery Plant is also taking residents’ metal cans for recycling. With garbage processing unavailable, recyclable materials that are not separated are taken to a landfill.
The power plant has been shuttered since July 6. To learn more about the city’s waste reduction efforts given the shutdown of the power plant, click here.
