Ames Electric Services has announced it will break ground for its new solar generation facility in Ames this week, which residents can "invest" in and receive a monthly credit on their utility bills for the next 20 years.
According to a July 15 press release posted on the City of Ames website, the SunSmart Ames Community Solar Project will be located on Airport Road and is slated to be operational by the end of the year and will be built by ForeFront Power in San Francisco.
“A community solar project allows all residents to invest in renewable energy,” Ames Electric Services Director Donald Kom said in a statement. “This two-megawatt community solar farm will add clean, solar energy to our renewable energy portfolio, which includes refuse-derived fuel.”
The new solar facility will be constructed by San Francisco-based ForeFront Power with Ames Electric purchasing the electricity produced from the solar panels, according to the release.
Ames Electric customers can subscribe to the solar farm by visiting www.CityofAmes.org/solar to purchase a one-time $300 investment in "power packs" energy shares to receive the monthly credit on their utility bill, which will be based on energy generated, the release stated.
