Intersection Closed for Crosswalk Repainting

Road

City of Ames issued the following announcement on August 17.

The intersection of Fifth Street and Douglas Avenue will be closed to all traffic for one day from 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24, to 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday Aug. 25, to repaint the crosswalks. In the event of rain or cold weather, the painting and intersection closure will be rescheduled to take place 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, to 6:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 27.

The crosswalks at this intersection were painted in September 2019 featuring a custom-designed color theme as a visual way of demonstrating the City’s efforts to make all people feel welcome in Ames. The repainting will follow the same color pattern, with the crosswalks on Douglas Avenue featuring a minority-inclusive pride rainbow, the crosswalk on Fifth Street to the east featuring gender non-binary pride colors, and the crosswalk on Fifth Street to the west featuring pride transgender colors.

Closure of the intersection is necessary to allow time for the paint to cure. An outdoor latex product is used to create the vibrant colors instead of typical traffic paint. This paint product requires several hours to cure whereas typical traffic paint only requires a few seconds.
