City of Ames issued the following announcement on November 18.
As part of ongoing flood mitigation efforts along the Ioway Creek in the South Duff Avenue area, the City of Ames has contracted with Keller Excavating to begin excavating soil out of the creek area to lower flood water levels.
In addition to soil removal, the project includes creating pocket wetlands, constructing a new modular block retaining wall along Ioway Creek near Red Lobster, sanitary sewer lining, and building a trainer berm along northeast quadrant of Ioway Creek/South Duff Avenue bridge to guide water flows along the creek channel. Other activity in the area includes grinding of previously felled trees. The mulched tree material will be spread throughout the project and incorporated into the soil for stabilization. Vegetative restoration will be done in the area in the spring or summer of 2022.
On Monday, Nov. 22, work is anticipated to begin on the Red Lobster parking lot pavement improvements and parking space reconfiguration. On Monday, Nov. 29, earthwork will begin including the removal of more than 140,000 cubic yards of soil and tree stumps. Other work includes final tree felling, and asbestos removal and demolition of buildings located at 902 and 906 S. Duff Avenue.
Contractors are anticipated to work throughout the winter months and into spring.
The flood mitigation project is designed to provide conveyance improvements within the channel to lower flood levels in the South Duff Avenue area. This flood mitigation project is funded with a $3,747,450 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant and local match of $1,249,150.
