City of Ames recently issued the following announcement.
The Ames-Story County MLK Day Celebration Committee is hosting its second annual Essay Writing Contest to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All Ames and Story County high school students are invited to enter the contest.
Contestants are encouraged to become familiar with Dr. King’s "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" and then explain the significance of a specific quote from this text and its relevance to the United States today. The reading, quote, and additional submission requirements can be found at https://bit.ly/AmesMLKDay. Entries are due by midnight on Friday, Dec. 17.
Financial prizes will be awarded for first ($100), second ($75), and third ($50) places. Each of the winning students may either pre-record themselves reading their essay or may attend the Hybrid MLK Event at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, 2022.
“We hold an MLK Day Celebration each year to recognize the powerful legacy of Dr. King and learn from his example,” said Vanessa Baker-Latimer, with the MLK Celebration Committee. “By hosting our second annual essay contest, we hope to continue to educate and engage young people in keeping Dr. King’s legacy alive.”
