Work on the first stage of the continued reconstruction of 13th Street will begin Monday, April 4, weather permitting. This year’s project will include the section of 13th Street from Duff to Meadowlane avenues.
Beginning April 4, the two north (westbound lanes) of 13th Street from Carroll to Meadowlane avenues will be closed to install temporary pavement. Westbound traffic on 13th Street will be shifted to single-lane head-to-head traffic on the south (eastbound) lanes. During this phase, access to sidewalk, driveways, and side streets on the north side of 13th Street will be closed. Placement of temporary pavement is expected to be complete within two weeks.
Once the temporary pavement is complete, traffic will be shifted to the two outside lanes of 13th Street (one lane for westbound traffic and one lane for eastbound traffic) and work on the removal and replacement of manholes at the center line will begin. Additional phases of the project will follow.
The City of Ames has contracted with Con-Struct to complete this project, which will include new concrete street pavement, storm and sanitary sewer improvements, water main replacement, residential water transfers, shared use path, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk ramp improvements.
At all times, one lane of 13th Street in each direction will remain open to traffic. However, access to side streets will be restricted for safety reasons and to ease potential congestion of the construction zone. Construction is anticipated to be completed in fall 2022. As with all projects, the actual duration will depend on weather conditions.
All are encouraged to take note of this construction activity in the area and allow extra travel time as delays will occur. The work zone will have low speeds and narrow lanes. Please use alternate routes if available. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through the construction area.
