The Ames Public Art Commission and Parks and Recreation Department are inviting Ames residents to propose designs to be painted on decommissioned fire hydrants. The hydrants will be used as part of a new art installation at the Ames Dog Park, 605 Billy Sunday Road. As many as four artists will be invited to paint their selected design on a hydrant.
Artists are invited to apply as individuals or in groups. The selected artists will paint the hydrants and receive an honorarium of $100 and up to an additional $50 reimbursement for paint supplies purchased for the project. The designs will be featured at the entrance to the Dog Park for two years, when new designs will be solicited from the community.
“We are so excited to move forward with such a fun, whimsical project,” said Ames Public Art Commission past chair, Angie DeWaard. “It’s so fun to reuse these scrapped hydrants in a wholly original and clever way. I can imagine the social media posts and selfies will be unique!”
Complete program details can be found at www.cityofames.org/PAC. Artists of all ages are welcome to apply by July 31. Completed entry forms or questions can be sent to publicartcommission@cityofames.org.
