World-Renowned Documentary to be Screened with Live Musical Score on Sept. 10

The Ames Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with Austin, Texas, based music ensemble Montopolis, will present a screening of the 1929 Ukrainian documentary “Man with a Movie Camera” at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in the City Auditorium, 520 Sixth St. The film will be shown with a live score presented by Montopolis.

“Man with a Movie Camera” is an experimental 1929 Soviet silent documentary film, directed by Dziga Vertov, filmed by his broker Mikhail Kaufman, and edited by his wife Yelizaveta Svilova. The film presents urban life in Moscow and the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Odessa during the late 1920s. Revered as a visual masterpiece, and one of the greatest documentaries ever made, the film gives historical context to the current Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“This is an opportunity for the Auditorium to present something a little different, and it will be a very unique experience for our audience,” said Auditorium, Bandshell, and Community Center Manager Craig Kaufman.

Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased in person at the Community Center or by calling 515.239.5350. Tickets will also be sold at the door the evening of the performance.

The Parks and Recreation Department manages 38 parks and offers approximately 180 athletic, aquatic, instructional, and wellness programs. Indoor programs are provided year-round at the Community Center and Ames/ISU Ice Arena. For more information, go to the Parks and Recreation homepage at www.amesparkrec.org or call the Community Center at 515.239.5350.
