In September 2021, U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the City of Ames $1,269,248 in HOME-ARP funds to be used for community housing needs. The City’s Planning and Housing Department is hosting three public forums to get input on how to spend the funds. Also, a survey is available for housing organizations and Ames residents to provide feedback.
Public meetings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9; and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12. All meetings will be held in the Farwell Brown Auditorium in the Ames Public Library, 515 Douglas Ave. The online survey is available at www.CityOfAmes.org/Housing and will be available through Wednesday, Jan. 18.
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 appropriated $5 billion to provide affordable rental housing, services, and non-congregate shelter to individuals experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable populations. The funds were allocated by formula to jurisdictions that qualified for funding through the HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME Program) from the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This special one-time round of funding is called the “HOME-ARP” program.
HOME-ARP Funds can be used for four eligible activities.
- Production or Preservation of Affordable Housing
- Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA)
- Supportive Services, including services defined at 24 CFR 578.53(e), homeless prevention services and housing counseling
- Purchase and Development of Non-Congregate Shelter
