Ames Electric Services has installed three new EV charging stations. The new chargers, available to the public, are located at 300 Clark Ave., 603 Douglas Ave., and 1114 Duff Ave.
“Ames Electric Services offers programs and rebates that encourage our customers to consider EVs for transportation,” said Energy Services Coordinator Joel Zook. “By continuing to add charging stations in Ames, we are reinforcing our commitment to ensuring EV charging is easy and accessible to all.”
With the addition of these new stations, Ames Electric Services operates eight charging locations. Other Level-2 charging locations include the west parking lot of City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.; west of Ames Power Plant, 200 E. Fifth St.; and the Ames Intermodal Facility parking ramp, 129 Hayward Ave. Two Level-3 Fast Chargers are located near U.S. 30 at Kum and Go, 2108 Isaac Newton Drive.
Ames Electric Services provides public charging currently at a cost of 10 cents per kWh at the Level-2 charging locations and 15 cents per kWh at the Level-3 fast-charging station. Starting July 1, an excise fuel tax of 2.6 cents per kWh as a result of state law will be added to the cost at both Level-2 and Level-3 charging locations. According to U.S. Department of Energy, fueling electric vehicles with electricity at the City of Ames’ Level-2 chargers is comparable to paying $1.15 per gallon of gas, in terms of the cost of fuel per mile.
Additional public charging is offered throughout Ames by private businesses. To locate charging stations, go to https://www.plugshare.com. This website includes all brands and ownership, along with information on the charging cost and type of charger for each location.
