The Ames/ISU Ice Arena will be closed June 25 through August 14 for annual maintenance. Traditionally, the annual maintenance closure occurs during the month of May, but the closure has been adjusted to accommodate more extensive projects needed at the ice arena this year and contractor timelines.

One project that will be completed during this timeframe is releveling the sand base below the sheet of ice. This will require removing the current sheet of ice, releveling the sand base, and creating a new sheet of ice. “Releveling the sand needs to be done every five to 10 years, which does require more time than our typical annual maintenance tasks,” said Ice Arena Manager Taylor Bassett. “By constructing a good base on which to build a sheet of ice, we will be able to provide a quality ice surface that is level, flat, and requires less maintenance.”

Other tasks that will be completed during this timeframe include painting the ice, painting the interior of the facility, completing compressor maintenance, repairing boards, Olympia (ice resurfacer) maintenance, and adding a mural provided by the Ames Public Art Commission.
