Iowa State and Portland State played to a 2-2 draw Thursday evening at the Cyclone Soccer Complex, marking the season opener for both teams.
The Cyclones fell behind early after Portland State’s Aliayha Saldana scored from about 30 feet out in the 14th minute. Iowa State responded with two consecutive goals: Lauren Hernandez tied the match in the 22nd minute with a backheel finish following a corner kick from Morgan Goodman, and Goodman then gave Iowa State a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute, converting on a cross from freshman Megan Walters.
Portland State equalized late in the match when Kalo Iongi scored off an assist from Carmen Lewis in the 82nd minute. The game ended with both teams level at two goals each.
Goodman and Ella Zimmerman led Iowa State with three shots apiece. Megan Walters and Regan John recorded assists for the Cyclones. Four Cyclones—Zimmerman, Lucy Froitzheim, Hernandez, and John—played all 90 minutes. Taylor Spitzer contributed significant time off the bench with 57 minutes played. Goalkeeper Kasey Cannistraro made her first start for Iowa State, registering one save.
For Portland State, Kamaria Hughes had three shots while three other Vikings added two each. The Vikings managed three shots on goal and converted two of them. Five players went the full distance for Portland State; Natalie Cunningham finished with two saves.
Iowa State held a slight edge in total shots (13-12) and led in corner kicks by a margin of six to two.
