Iowa State University’s women’s soccer team secured its 200th program win with a late goal by defender Isabella Agrusso, defeating Creighton 1-0 in Omaha. The match was decided in the final minutes when Agrusso scored from about 40 feet out, breaking a scoreless tie and giving the Cyclones their first victory of the season.
The game remained tight throughout, with both teams displaying strong defensive efforts. Iowa State (1-0-1) and Creighton (1-2-0) combined for 11 saves. Cyclone goalkeeper Kasye Cannistraro recorded a career-high seven saves and earned her first career shutout. She was one of three Iowa State players, along with Ella Zimmerman and Lucy Froitzheim, to play all 90 minutes.
Freshman Megan Walters led Iowa State with two shots, while seven other Cyclones contributed one shot each. Five of the team’s nine total attempts were on target, though Creighton outshot Iowa State 15-9. For Creighton, Olivia Duray, Brynn Gardner, and Ariana Mondiri each had three shots.
The decisive moment came after Ella Ciardullo sent a crossfield pass to Agrusso in the closing minutes. As Creighton’s goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac moved aggressively off her line, Agrusso lofted the ball over her head into the net.
“It’s always fun to win in such dramatic fashion, but we were really good throughout the whole match. We did a really good job with the game plan, created a lot of good chances, and executed well. I’m really proud of our women, and they earned that win tonight,” said head coach Matt Fannon.
Iowa State will next face Drake at home on Sunday, August 24 at 6 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+.
