Iowa State University's women's soccer team lost 3-1 to the University of Colorado in Boulder on Thursday, marking its first away conference match of the season. The Cyclones, now with a record of 4-2-2 overall and 1-1-0 in Big 12 play, saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
Colorado's Hope Leyba led her team with a hat trick, scoring all three goals for the Buffaloes. This was Leyba's second hat trick of the season, making her the first player in Colorado program history to achieve that milestone twice in one year. "We were really excellent tonight and deserved so much more from the match. We had two moments of hesitation inside our box and it was ultimately the difference. But once again, we see just how capable we are of competing in this incredibly high-level league. We'll bounce back and be ready for Sunday," said Iowa State head coach Matt Fannon.
Iowa State’s only goal came late in the game when Morgan Goodman scored in the 82nd minute, ending Colorado’s shutout streak that had lasted since September 7 against Wisconsin. Megan Walters and Erin Hopewell each took two shots for Iowa State during the match, while goalkeeper Kasey Cannistraro recorded four saves.
Colorado finished with advantages in both shots (17-10) and corner kicks (11-2). Both teams were even with 11 fouls each. Four different Colorado players—Ava Priest, Ruby Hayward, Caley Swierenga, and Greer Maguire—provided assists on Leyba’s goals.
The Cyclones will next play at home against Texas Tech on Sunday, September 28 at 1 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+.
