Iowa State tennis records three wins on opening day at Drake Invite

The Iowa State women's tennis team began its participation at the Drake Invite in Des Moines on Friday, securing two doubles victories and one singles win.

In doubles play, both Cyclone teams lost their first matches. Valeska San Martin Ramirez and Gabriella Kellner were defeated by Katelynn Kock and Nina Wiese of Nebraska-Omaha, 6-2. Gabriela Felix and Kira Smith fell to Jordane Dookie and Jana Ruzic of Drake, 6-1. However, both pairs recovered in their second matches. San Martin and Kellner won against Matilde Parreira and Sabrina Tolstova from Eastern Michigan with a score of 6-1. Felix and Smith beat Sedina Begic and Abbie Peterson from Northern Iowa, 6-0.

In singles competition, San Martin was the only Iowa State player to record a win. She overcame Nina Wiese from Nebraska-Omaha in a close match, 7-6 (6), 2-6, [10-7]. The other Cyclone players faced defeats: Gabriella Kellner lost to Alva Norberg of North Dakota (3-6, 6-3, [10-6]), Kira Smith was beaten by Corinne Barber of Nebraska-Omaha (6-2, 6-1), and Gabriela Felix lost to Jule Schulte of North Dakota (6-1, 2-6, [10-4]).

The team is scheduled to continue play in Des Moines on Saturday morning.
