Sophomore Mari Paz Alberto Vilar | Iowa State Cyclones Women's Tennis

Iowa State tennis player Mari Paz Alberto Vilar advanced to the round of 16 in singles at the ITA Central Sectional Championships, held in College Station, Texas. Alberto Vilar also teamed up with Stanislava Shulzhenko to reach the doubles quarterfinals after a decisive 6-2, 6-0 victory over Kansas State’s Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Zhanel Rustermova.

The pair will next face Northwestern’s Mika Dagan Fruchtman and Neena Feldman on Friday morning. Fruchtman and Feldman previously defeated the tournament’s top-seeded team.

In singles competition, Alberto Vilar secured a win against Notre Dame’s Bojana Pozder with scores of 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3. She is scheduled to play Kansas’ Kyoka Kubo on Friday afternoon.

Ashlee Narker, another Iowa State player, was defeated by Oklahoma’s Oyinlomo Quadre, who is ranked No. 70 nationally. The match ended with scores of 7-5, 6-2 in favor of Quadre.
