University suspends, sanctions Men’s Cyclone Hockey Club

Iowa State University is suspending the Men’s Cyclone Hockey Club from all competition for the 2022-2023 academic year following an investigation into allegations of team hazing.

In May, the university issued an interim suspension of all men’s team activities based on the serious nature of the hazing allegations and concerns about team finances. This step provided time for the university to investigate the claims as well as the team’s organizational structure and oversight by Recreation Services.

The investigation by the Office of Student Conduct found the team violated the Student Code of Conduct by organizing team activities that intentionally targeted new or rookie members. The activities, dating back to at least 2018, involved underage drinking, alcohol abuse, personal humiliation as well as financial penalties that were linked to admission, continued membership, or elevated status within the men’s hockey club.

Internal Audit and University Human Resources conducted a separate investigation of oversight by Recreation Services staff and the coaching staff. The findings show a lack of understanding and appropriate oversight of student complaints and club finances.

Team sanctions, restructuring

In addition to the year-long suspension, the men’s team must develop a comprehensive review and plan outlining new and continuing team education, complete anti-hazing and alcohol and drug abuse training and restructure as a traditional, student-led sports club. More details about the sanctions are available in the investigative summary.

If the training and restructuring activities are completed by Dec. 16, 2022, the men’s team can resume team practices and intersquad scrimmages in spring 2023. However, the team will not be allowed to travel or compete in competitions or league games during the spring semester. Full team activities will resume in summer 2023 if the team follows the guidelines and there are no other violations of university policy.

The suspension will be extended if the requirements are not met or the men’s club violates university policy.
