Iowa has seen its fair share of COVID-19 cases and has endured a spike in the past month or so and the City of Ames is no exception.
The Ames City Council took a step in mitigating the spread of the deadly pandemic and implemented a mandatory face covering ordinance on Sept. 1 and it took effect four days later, according to the city's website.
The ordinance requires people in Ames ages three and older to wear a face covering that covers their nose and mouth unless they qualify for an exemption. The ordinance will remain in effect through the end of the year.
There are some exceptions to the ordinance. Persons younger than three and any one who has difficulty breathing or is on a ventilator or oxygen therapy do not have to wear a mask.
People in the city must wear face coverings when they are outside or inside and can't stay at least six feet away from others who are not a member of their household. These places include, grocery and retail stores, gas stations and convenience stores, fitness centers and pharmacies.
