Story County residents affected by the derecho in August are now eligible to apply for the FEMA Individual Assistance program.

FEMA Individual Assistance takes the place of the Iowa Assistance Program and helps individuals who have experienced storm damage to their place of residence, according to a post on the City of Ames website.

“The FEMA Individual Assistance program is open to any homeowner or renter whose primary residence is uninhabitable or inaccessible due to the disaster and who has housing needs not covered by insurance,” the post states. “By law, FEMA assistance cannot duplicate the assistance you receive from your insurance company.”

The FEMA website states it will provide housing, rental and transitional sheltering assistance, as well temporary housing. FEMA can also reimburse individuals for basic home repairs and many expenses caused by the disaster including medical and dental care, moving and storage, clean-up items and damages to essential household items.
