River Town of the Year Celebration Continues with Pregracke Lecture, Film Festival, and Stream Cleanup

City of Ames issued the following announcement on September 16.

The community is invited to “Ames River Town of the Year Celebration, Where Conservation Gets Inspired,” a series of special events highlighting water quality and natural resources. These events include a presentation by environmental speaker Chad Pregracke, the Wild and Scenic Film Festival presented by Prairie Rivers of Iowa, and a stream cleanup event.

“Ames is committed to improving water quality and restoring natural resources, including our many creeks and the Skunk River,” said Stormwater Resource Analyst Liz Calhoun. “We are sponsoring these events to provide opportunities for the community be informed, inspired, and get involved in these efforts.”

Chad Pregracke, founder of river clean-up organization “Living Lands and Waters,” will give a presentation at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, in the City Hall Auditorium, 515 Clark Ave. Pregracke will share his organization’s efforts to protect and preserve rivers and watersheds around the Midwest, and what others can do to help. Pregracke will answer audience questions and sign copies of his book, “From the Bottom Up: One Man’s Crusade to Clean America’s Rivers,” following his presentation. Books will be available for purchase for $20 (cash only). The lecture is free and open to the public.

The Wild and Scenic Film Festival presented by Prairie Rivers of Iowa will be from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, in City Auditorium, 520 Sixth St. The festival includes a collection of documentary-style films, expert panelists, and displays featuring water quality, native plant and wildlife habitat restoration, and the Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway.
