Iowa State women's swimming and diving falls to Illinois but earns key event wins

The Iowa State swimming and diving team concluded its dual meet against Illinois on Saturday at Beyer Pool in Ames. The Cyclones were defeated by Illinois with a final score of 123-82, but the team delivered notable performances in several events.

"Overall, we put some more points on the board which is good, it means our process is going in the right direction," said head coach Matt Leach. "All in all, as we head into next week, we're still going to keep working with hopes to see even more improvement on the road next weekend."

Iowa State secured two event wins during the meet. Freshman Kendall Mallers won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.24, narrowly defeating Illinois' Adelaide Reaser by 1.17 seconds. Katherine Mitchell claimed first place in platform diving with a score of 216.00, edging out teammate Grace Marek by less than four points.

In the 100 freestyle, Grace Swoboda finished second with a time of 52.31, just behind Illinois' Sara Jass, who posted a 51.92. Sophomore Anja Peck earned two top-five finishes, placing third in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.89) and fourth in the 400 IM (4:31.90).

The Cyclones also demonstrated depth in the 500 freestyle, as Carlotta Gazzola (5:04.67) and Corinne Guist (5:07.24) both finished in the top five. Madi Dohrn was runner-up in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:06.68, trailing Illinois' Sophia Paduano by 1.62 seconds.

On the diving boards, Abby Tollefson took first place in the 1-meter event with a score of 283.50. In platform diving, Kate Mitchell, Grace Marek, and Ally Blumenfeld swept the top three positions for Iowa State.

- 400 Medley Relay: Illinois (Paduano, Duran, Diner, Allan), 3:47.89

- 500 Free: Liv Dorshorst, Illinois, 5:03.53

- 1M Diving: Abby Tollefson, Iowa State, 283.50

- 100 Free: Sara Jass, Illinois, 51.92

- 200 Back: Sophia Paduano, Illinois, 2:05.06

- 100 Breast: Chloe Diner, Illinois, 1:03.49

- 200 Fly: Kendall Mallers, Iowa State, 2:07.24

- 200 Free: Eva Allan, Illinois, 1:54.01

- Platform Diving: Kate Mitchell, Iowa State, 216.00

- 400 IM: Sara Jass, Illinois, 4:22.44

- 200 Free Relay: Illinois (Wilhelm, Yousuf, Cavaliere, Allan), 1:36.29

Iowa State is scheduled to compete again next week with meets against South Dakota State on October 23 and South Dakota on October 24.
