Ames Mayor John Haila and members of the Ames City Council invite the community to participate in a family-friendly bike ride around Ames, starting and ending at City Hall. The 7.5-mile ride will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 21, in the west parking lot at Ames City Hall, 515 Clark Ave. Bicyclists of all ages and experience levels are welcome to join the ride. There is no pre-registration necessary or cost to participate. Bike helmets are strongly encouraged.

“May is National Bike Month, so it’s a great time to get out and enjoy our city on bicycle,” said Mayor Haila. “The south route this year will allow us to explore new bike paths and take stops at the Tedesco Learning Corridor and the Fifth Street wetlands.”

Bicyclists will exit the City Hall parking lot onto Sixth Street and follow the Sixth Street bike path west to Brookside Park. At Brookside Park, cyclists will take the path south from Brookside Park through Stuart Smith Park to South Fourth Street, and then west to University Boulevard.

At University Boulevard, cyclists will travel south to the Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor. Cyclists will then travel on the path through the corridor east and then north past the ISU Veterinary Medicine College to South 16th Street.

At South 16th Street, cyclists will travel east to South Grand Avenue, then north on South Grand Avenue to South Fifth Street, and east on South Fifth Street to South Walnut Avenue. Cyclists will then travel north on South Walnut Avenue, crossing Lincoln Way and continuing north on Clark Avenue back to City Hall.

Also in celebration of National Bike Month, Mayor Haila and City Council members will kick-off Bike to Work Week by hosting a free Bike Commuter Continental Breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. on Monday, May 16, in front of City Hall. Bicyclists are invited to stop by for a snack and beverage on their way to work or school.
