No Discharging Grass into Streets!

1

It’s that time of year!  Grass is growing and lawns are needing mowed.  The City of Madrid wants to remind all residents that it is illegal to discharge your grass clippings and yard waste into the city streets, sidewalks and alleyways.  Not only does it pose a safety hazard for motorcyclists and bicyclists, it clogs storm drains throughout the City which contributes to flooding and backups into streets and basements.

Both Madrid City Code (Title 3, Chapter 1, Section 5.2) and the State of Iowa Code §321.369 state that it is against the law for any person to throw or deposit on any street or sidewalk any glass bottle, glass, nails, tacks, wire, cans, trash, garbage, rubbish, litter, offal, or any other debris or substance (i.e., grass clippings) likely to injure any person, animal or vehicle.

Please take a few minutes to blow any clippings from the city streets and sidewalks back into the yard.  Thank you!
