Ames Parks and Recreation Department continues to seek lifeguards to staff Furman Aquatic Center for the summer season.

The department offers many avenues to apply for the lifeguard positions. Applications are accepted online at www.cityofames.org/jobs, and the department has upcoming hiring events where interested candidates can apply onsite, interview, take the in-water pre-skills, complete paperwork, and sign up for a certification course.

Upcoming Onsite Hiring Event Dates

  • Friday, May 19 | 5-8 p.m.| Forker Pool, Iowa State University, 534 Wallace Road
  • Friday, May 26 | 7-8 p.m. | Furman Aquatic Center (weather dependent, site may change)
What applicants need to bring to the hiring event:

  • A parent/guardian if under the age of 18 to fill out hiring paperwork
  • Social security number
  • Driver’s license
  • Swim attire and towel
  • Copies of current applicable Red Cross certifications
Lifeguard Certification classes are free of charge to those who will be working at Furman Aquatic Center. Upcoming Lifeguard Certification courses are Friday, May 19, to Sunday, May 21, and Friday, June 2 to Sunday, June 4. Participants must attend all three days.

Staffing the facility has historically been challenging, and communities nationwide continue to struggle with lifeguard staff.  “Safety at Furman remains our No. 1 priority, and we operate under mandated minimum staffing levels to ensure a safe environment,” said Recreation Superintendent Courtney Kort. “Without enough employees, our only option is reduced hours of operation.”

The Parks and Recreation Department manages 38 parks and offers approximately 180 athletic, aquatic, instructional, and wellness programs. Indoor programs are provided throughout the winter at the Community Center and Ames/ISU Ice Arena. For more information, go to the Parks and Recreation homepage at www.amesparkrec.org or call the Community Center at 515.239.5350.
