The four tennis courts at Emma McCarthy Lee Park, 3400 Ross Road, will be closed beginning on Wednesday, July 5, for a renovation and resurfacing project. It is anticipated the courts will be closed for the remainder of July.

Ames Parks and Recreation staff will begin dismantling the courts, including removing the posts and nets. The proposed improvements include converting two of the four tennis courts into six pickleball courts by adding new fencing to separate the courts, installing new net posts and nets, repairing cracks, and resurfacing the entire playing surface with new boundary markings. The City has contracted with Upper Midwest Athletic Construction, of Andover, Minn., and Des Moines Steel Fence to complete the work.

“With the growing popularity of pickleball among all ages, we want to offer facilities that best meet the needs of our residents,” said Joshua Thompson, Parks and Facilities Superintendent. “This project will provide an improved experience for tennis players, and it allows pickleball players more options to pursue their sport.”

During the closure, pickleball and tennis courts are available at Inis Grove and Brookside Parks.

The Parks and Recreation Department manages 38 parks and offers approximately 180 athletic, aquatic, instructional, and wellness programs. Indoor programs are provided throughout the winter at the Community Center and Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
