Boone County residents received a total of $2,670,437 through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during 2023, according to data from Iowa's Department of Human Services.

This translates to a 15.8% decrease in the amount of money allocated through the food assistance program in 2023, compared to 2022, when residents in the county received $3,171,541.

Qualified recipients in the program are eligible to receive financial assistance in the form of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which then can be used to buy selected groceries. The amount of benefits depends on the net income and household size.

In 2023, the program assisted 1,407 individuals across 722 households in the county. This compares to the previous year's 1,566 recipients in 806 households.

Statewide, Polk County received the largest sum in benefits, with $101,313,004 distributed among 50,042 recipients across 24,448 households in 2023. Scott County came in second, granting $42,703,578 to 20,459 people living in 10,326 households.

Boone County ranked 30th in Iowa.

In total, SNAP granted $524,184,590 among counties in the state during 2023.
