Iowa State and Drake played to a 1-1 draw Sunday night at the Cyclone Soccer Complex, with senior Lucy Froitzheim scoring her first career goal in the final minute to tie the match. The game marked Senior Day for Iowa State.
The Cyclones trailed after Drake’s Angela Gutierrez scored on a header in the 56th minute, assisted by Izzy Snowden. Iowa State pressed for an equalizer throughout the second half but were repeatedly denied by Drake goalkeeper Addie Ford, who finished with five saves.
With less than a minute remaining, Isabella Agruso delivered a throw-in that found Lauren Hernandez, whose header set up Froitzheim to score from close range. The late goal mirrored Thursday’s win over Creighton, when Agruso netted the deciding goal in the 89th minute.
"It is a great step that our team has taken to be so tough going into the closing stages of matches. We won't always play fantastically, so to grind out a late foal again is a top habit to have," head coach Matt Fannon said after the match.
Fannon also reflected on his group of seniors: "It's such an eclectic group of seniors, including a couple who are pretty new, and a couple who aren't able to take their senior year because of injury. But every one of them has served our program with passion and determination and we are very proud that they will always call Iowa State home."
Megan Walters, Hernandez and Ella Ciardullo each recorded two shots for Iowa State. Goalkeeper Kasey Cannistraro made four saves and played all 90 minutes alongside Agruso and Ella Zimmerman.
Drake had more total shots (12-11), while Iowa State led in corner kicks (5-3). Both teams tallied five saves apiece; Drake committed more fouls (16) compared to Iowa State’s ten.
Next up for Iowa State is a home match against Memphis on Sunday, August 31 at 6 p.m., which will be streamed live on ESPN+.
