Iowa State University’s women’s soccer team lost 3-1 to the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday at the Cyclones Soccer Complex in Ames. The Cyclones, now with a record of 4-6-2 overall and 1-5 in Big 12 play, were unable to hold onto an early lead.

Freshman Megan Walters opened the scoring for Iowa State in the 17th minute, putting the home side ahead. Nine minutes later, Kansas equalized through Kate Langfelder after a pass from Livvy Moore. The teams went into halftime tied at one goal each, with Kansas holding a significant advantage in shots and corner kicks.

Kansas continued to press after halftime. Jillian Gregorski gave the Jayhawks their first lead of the night in the 55th minute, followed by Emika Kawagishi adding another goal in the 77th minute. The Jayhawks finished with goals from three different players: Langfelder, Gregorski, and Kawagishi.

Iowa State had limited offensive opportunities throughout the match. Besides Walters’ goal, only Chloe Broughton, Taylor Spitzer, Ella Ciardullo and Erin Hopewell registered shots for ISU. Defenders Isabella Agrusso, Ella Zimmerman and Kasey Cannistraro played all 90 minutes; Cannistraro recorded seven saves.

Kansas outshot Iowa State by a wide margin (25-5), including ten shots on target compared to three for ISU. The visitors also earned ten corner kicks while Iowa State had none. Kansas committed more fouls (12) than Iowa State (11) and received three yellow cards during the game.

Reflecting on his team’s performance, head coach Matt Fannon said: "Both halves, it was just a situation where it could have gone either way. Every second ball seemed to go their way and every chance we had to put our foot on the ball and calm the game down we ended up rushed. Because we were chasing, we didn't get the chance to change the momentum."

The Cyclones will next face Houston at home on Thursday, October 16 at 6 p.m., with live audio coverage available via cyclones.com.
