City of Ames issued the following announcement on Jan. 6.

Public input is being sought regarding the creation of a new Downtown Plaza across from City Hall between Fifth and Sixth streets. This proposed community gathering will include a mix of elements designed to enhance the Downtown experience, such as interactive water features, landscaped green space, public art, shade structures, open gathering areas, benches, restrooms, and winter ice skating.

A Zoom teleconference meeting has been scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21. Those interested can participate via telephone or Internet.

At a recent meeting, Ames City Council approved hiring Confluence, a Midwest-based landscape architecture company, to develop an all-seasons plaza design for the property, which currently serves as public parking. City Council identified a wide range of features to include in the plaza concept to create a true amenity for visitors to Downtown.

During the Zoom meeting, Confluence will present the concept, and participants will be given an opportunity to provide feedback and ask questions. Those who are unable to attend the meeting or who want to learn more about the project should visit www.cityofames.org/DowntownPlaza

“We are exploring how the space can provide a diverse set of experiences for individuals and groups that may use it,” said Planning and Housing Director Kelly Diekmann. “We would like the public to share their thoughts on features that would make the plaza an attractive and fun destination as part of a visit Downtown.”
